For the safety of the Texas State and San Marcos communities, we demand that you close Alkek Library. Despite reduced hours limited to students, up to 500 people are entering the library every day, making it impossible to enforce CDC best practices such as social distancing or the use of masks and gloves. The administrations at peer universities quickly followed the American Library Association’s March 17th call to close all libraries, and you should do the same.

Close the library—All staff move to work from home and, if necessary, given the resources to do so from state-allocated emergency funds. Allow library staff to enter on an as-needed basis to pick up personal items or work.
No layoffs or furloughs—anyone who cannot work from home, including guards and custodians, should be provided with Emergency Closure paid leave until it is safe for them to return or work from home is possible.
Will you follow the lead of nearly every other higher education facility in Texas and close the library? Thank You!
